Ancient firs, several types of sharp-needle spruce, gnarled pine trees, vague pathways in uncomfortably soft soil, and no light except that which you carry.
Some strongly suspect this name was given to the extremely thick forest of evergreens (well a lot was dead and brown) to keep others away and let it exist naturally without wagons and timber cutting. Then again, the moment daylight's reach is left behind, there's a fair chance a dire bear or worse will slice open the most experienced traveller before they can scream.
